- Machining Centers1.Introduction
The machining center is a numerically controlled milling machine that is equipped with an automatic tool changer. The manual milling machine is a very versatile and productive machine tool, but when coupled with a computer control it becomes the production center of the machine shop. Repetitive operations, such as drilling, tapping, and boring, are perfect applications for the machine center.
2.Type of Machining Centers
Machining centers are identified by the direction in which the spindle lies. As with manual milling machine, machining center are either horizontal or vertical spindle machines.
2.1.Horizontal Machining Centers
Horizontal machining centers are typically the workhorses in the shop and are patterned after horizontal boring mills. The horizontal configuration of the spindle lends itself to heavy depths of cuts on larger work pieces. Horizontal machining centers often have twin tables known as pallets. While one pallet is within the machining envelope, the often pallet is swung free, allowing loading and /or unloading of parts. The two basic types of palletizing methods are the linear shuttle system and the rotary shuttle system.
2.2.Vertical Machining Centers
The vertical machining center is probably the most versatile and common CNC machine found in the machine shop. The vertical configuration of the spindle lends itself to quick, easy work piece setups. There are a variety of types and sizes of vertical machining centers. The type and size of the work done will determine which
